Innovative chalk-based system incorporates mesoporous silica to deliver sustained insecticide release. Ideal for easy application via chalk patterns on surfaces, offering tunable release profiles for various environments.

Overview

This innovative solution involves a chalk-based controlled release system for insect repellents, leveraging the incorporation of insecticide-loaded mesoporous silica nanomaterials into chalk. The system allows for a sustained release of insecticides by simply drawing chalk patterns on various surfaces. This approach offers a practical, user-friendly method to distribute insect repellents effectively over extended periods, with applications in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Technical specifications

The system utilizes mesoporous silica nanomaterials (MSN) known for their high cargo capacities due to large pore volumes and surface areas. These nanomaterials are incorporated into calcium carbonate/sulfate chalk using a modified mixing and pressing method. Key features include:

  • Tunable release profiles dictated by the surface chemistry, pore size, and functionalization of MSN
  • Ability to load up to 40 wt% of organic molecules into the mesopores
  • Compatibility with a variety of insecticides and environmental conditions
  • Simple application method by drawing chalk patterns
Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 3, this technology is in the experimental proof-of-concept stage. Initial studies have demonstrated the ability to load and release insecticides in both aqueous and ambient air environments. Future validation will involve testing commercially available insecticides with unique structures and chemical characteristics to optimize the delivery system. The research plan anticipates completion within 12-18 months.
