A research-driven solution using clove essential oil to combat Aspergillus flavus and eliminate carcinogenic aflatoxin B1 in peanuts. The active ingredient eugenol (83.25% concentration) has demonstrated fungicidal activity at 500 ppm and reduced aflatoxin B1 levels by up to 46%, offering an ecofriendly alternative to synthetic fungicides for Integrated Pest Management.
This solution leverages clove essential oil (EO) as a natural, ecofriendly antifungal and anti-aflatoxigenic agent to control Aspergillus flavus contamination in peanuts. A. flavus produces aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a highly carcinogenic compound that poses serious health risks to consumers worldwide. Current synthetic fungicides raise environmental and safety concerns, creating demand for safer biocontrol alternatives. Clove EO addresses this need by both inhibiting fungal growth and suppressing aflatoxin production, positioning it as a promising seed protectant and fumigant for use within Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs.
The research aims to further characterize the active ingredient eugenol and evaluate clove oil in both liquid and vapor forms for broader application across the peanut production chain.
Key features:
Planned validation activities:
This research is currently at an advanced laboratory validation stage. The fungicidal and anti-aflatoxigenic properties of clove EO have been confirmed through in vitro testing, electron microscopy, and HPLC analysis. Of 15 essential oils tested, clove demonstrated the most effective antifungal activity. Future validation steps include vapor-phase efficacy testing, greenhouse trials, and large-scale field trials, with fumigation facilities, greenhouse infrastructure, and peanut farm access already available. Current research collaborations are in place to support progression toward field-ready application within IPM frameworks.
