University

This solution investigates the compatibility of biocontrol agents and chemical fungicides to enhance disease control in canola, aiming to develop sustainable agriculture practices by minimizing chemical inputs. The research focuses on identifying effective combination strategies for pathogen suppression.

Overview

The compatibility of biocontrol agents with chemical fungicides offers a promising approach to sustainable agriculture by enhancing disease control in canola. This research aims to develop an integrated disease management strategy that leverages complementary mechanisms of action from both biocontrol agents and fungicides. The goal is to maximize pathogen suppression while minimizing the environmental impact of chemical inputs, offering a more sustainable solution for canola cultivation.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Evaluation of in vitro interactions between bacterial and fungal biocontrol agents to assess potential synergistic or antagonistic effects.
  • Study of the impact of various fungicide classes on the growth, viability, and biocontrol activity of selected microorganisms.
  • Application of growth inhibition assays, co-culture experiments, and molecular analyses to determine compatibility.
  • Greenhouse testing of promising biocontrol-fungicide combinations against Leptosphaeria maculans, the causal agent of blackleg in canola.
  • Potential adaptation of findings to other crop pathosystems to broaden the scope of sustainable disease management.
Technology readiness level

The current stage of development is at TRL 4. The research has transitioned from concept validation to testing in laboratory environments, with future plans for greenhouse testing to further validate the integrated strategy.
