Ecovaleric: electrochemical manufacturing of biomass-derived chemicals and materials

Company

Ecovaleric is developing a proprietary electrochemical manufacturing platform that converts biomass-derived feedstocks into high-value chemicals and materials. Our first product is gamma-valerolactone (GVL), a renewable, biodegradable dipolar aprotic solvent with established specialty applications and growing potential to replace conventional solvents such as NMP, DMF, and DMAc in industrial manufacturing.

Many biomass-derived chemicals have attractive performance and sustainability profiles but have struggled to achieve broad adoption because existing production methods are expensive, hydrogen-intensive, or difficult to scale. Ecovaleric addresses this challenge by using electricity rather than compressed hydrogen to manufacture platform chemicals through an electrochemical process designed to reduce conversion costs while supporting modular, domestic production.

Our technology is protected by a growing intellectual property portfolio originating from the University of Colorado Boulder, including a granted U.S. patent. The underlying research has been supported by more than $850,000 in non-dilutive funding, including NSF research grants, and has demonstrated selective electrochemical conversion of levulinic acid into key intermediates. We are now advancing process integration, pilot-scale validation, techno-economic analysis, and commercial application development.

We are currently conducting customer discovery and application validation across industrial solvents, advanced manufacturing, coatings, specialty chemicals, and battery materials. While GVL is our first commercial product, the same manufacturing platform is designed to enable future biomass-derived chemicals and materials.

We are seeking strategic partners interested in evaluating GVL or collaborating on scale-up and commercialization. Areas of interest include application testing, pilot projects, joint development agreements, manufacturing partnerships, feedstock integration, distribution, and strategic investment. We are particularly interested in working with companies developing sustainable materials, specialty chemicals, advanced manufacturing technologies, and bio-based supply chains.

About Ecovaleric

Ecovaleric is a sustainable technology company founded in 2024 that specializes in green chemistry by utilizing innovative electrochemical processes to convert renewable biomass into high-value products. The company’s core technology centers on the transformation of levulinic acid, derived from lignocellulosic biomass, into 4-Hydroxyvaleric Acid (e-HVA). This proprietary electrochemical process is designed to be modular, scalable, and efficient, demonstrating high selectivity and Faradaic efficiency. By using electricity to drive this conversion, Ecovaleric provides a sustainable alternative to traditional fermentation or catalytic methods, aiming to replace fossil-based feedstocks in industrial applications.

The resulting molecule, e-HVA, serves as a versatile platform intermediate for the production of biodegradable bioplastics, renewable biofuels, and green solvents. By offering a biobased, biocompatible, and compostable building block, the company enables partners and customers to reduce their environmental impact and advance the circular economy. Ecovaleric emerged from the University of Colorado Boulder's deep tech ecosystem and has been recognized for its potential to lower reliance on fossil fuels, targeting key sectors including advanced materials, chemicals, and manufacturing. The company is currently in its early stages of development and is actively working to commercialize its sustainable chemistry solutions.
