Essential oil blends with synthetic preservatives as alternatives to BIT in antimicrobial formulations

Company

A research program developing plant-derived essential oil (EO) blends combined with synthetic preservatives and boosters as effective, cost-efficient alternatives to BIT (benzisothiazolinone). The approach leverages synergistic antimicrobial activity of EOs such as limonene, camphor, eucalyptus, menthol, rosemary, tea tree, and lavender, enhanced by pH-neutral aromatic alcohols and aliphatic diols.

Overview

This program investigates essential oil (EO)-based antimicrobial formulations as alternatives to BIT (benzisothiazolinone), a widely used synthetic preservative. The research focuses on blending hydrophobic plant-derived essential oils with pH-neutral synthetic preservatives and boosters—including aromatic alcohols and aliphatic diols—to optimize antimicrobial performance and cost. Target essential oils include limonene, camphor, eucalyptus, menthol, rosemary, tea tree, and lavender, many of which are commercially available as synthetic analogs. The resulting blends are designed to serve as effective antimicrobial preservative systems for applications such as food safety, personal care products, cosmetics, and industrial formulations where BIT and similar preservatives are currently used.

Technical specifications

Core technology:

  • Essential oils and EO mixtures with documented antimicrobial activity against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites
  • Synergistic EO blends designed to enhance antimicrobial efficacy beyond individual oil performance
  • Blending of ethanol-soluble EOs with pH-neutral synthetic preservatives and boosters (aromatic alcohols, aliphatic diols) to improve cost-effectiveness and performance

Mechanism of action:

  • EOs and their hydrophobic components partition into bacterial cell membranes and mitochondrial lipids, disrupting membrane integrity
  • Membrane disruption increases permeability, causing leakage of critical ions and molecules and resulting in bacterial cell death
  • Low toxicity profile, excellent shelf-life, and cost-effectiveness of selected EOs support commercial viability

Validation methods:

  • Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion testing to evaluate organism sensitivity and resistance to EOs, EO mixtures, and blends with synthetic stabilizers
  • Tube liquid culture assays across pathogen concentrations from 10^1 to 10^8 CFU/mL
  • Testing against individual organisms and combinations of organisms using relevant media
  • Determination of minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) for each EO, EO blend, and EO blend with synthetic boosters via factorial study design
  • Evaluation using pure cultures of target organisms and product samples inoculated with the same
Technology readiness level

The program is at an early-to-mid stage of development, building on substantial existing scientific literature documenting antimicrobial activity of the selected essential oils. Future validation work led by Co-PIs Drs. V. King and S. Bryant will establish minimum bactericidal concentrations through systematic factorial studies using standardized microbiological methods. The technology has not yet been validated in commercial product formulations, and next steps include confirming efficacy against target organisms, optimizing blend ratios for cost and performance, and progressing toward formulation testing in real-world product matrices.

About Secure Food Solutions

Secure Food Solutions, Inc. (SFS) is a food safety technology company founded in 2014 that develops rapid microbial diagnostic platforms and imaging systems to detect and remove pathogens and contaminants from the food supply. The company’s core technical platforms include specialized hyperspectral imaging for the detection of aflatoxin in crops like corn and multi-phase chromogenic media for the rapid detection of pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, and Vibrio species. By providing fast, on-site testing and sorting capabilities that require no pre-enrichment, SFS aims to enhance food safety across farms, mills, and food processing environments.

These innovations are critical for stakeholders seeking to mitigate public health risks and economic losses associated with foodborne illnesses and contaminated grain. The company’s aflatoxin sorter technology, in particular, focuses on social impact by offering an affordable screening tool for small-scale farm households, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, to combat malnutrition and child mortality. Supported by competitive grants from organizations such as the National Science Foundation, Secure Food Solutions engages with the broader food supply chain to turn scientific research into practical, field-deployable solutions that help ensure a safer global food supply.
