Innovative ex vivo models using mouse synaptosomes and isolated cortex specimens to study neurotransmitter activity and neuropeptide pathways in neurodegenerative diseases. These models facilitate screening of neuroprotective agents and study of antioxidant effects.

Overview

This research focuses on developing innovative ex vivo models to study neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). Utilizing mouse brain synaptosomes and isolated cortex specimens, these models aim to evaluate neurotransmission processes and the effects of neurodegenerative agents. They provide valuable insights into the potential protective effects of antioxidants on neurotransmitter pathways and offer a rapid screening method for neuroprotective agents.

Technical specifications

Models Used:

  • Mouse Brain Synaptosomes: Used to study neurotransmitter release and turnover. This model is valuable for assessing the impact of neurodegenerative agents and the protective effects of antioxidants on biogenic amine pathways.
  • Isolated Mouse Cortex Specimens: Designed to evaluate neuropeptides, enzymes (such as MAOs and COMTs), and cytokines. This model facilitates the study of metabolic pathways and the assessment of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Experimental Phases:

  • Months 1-3: Focus on neurotransmitter synthesis and release in synaptosomes under conditions mimicking AD and PD.
  • Months 3-6: Investigate neuropeptides and neurotransmission enzymes in isolated brain tissues under similar conditions.
Technology readiness level

The research is currently at Technology Readiness Level 3, indicating that the models are in the experimental proof-of-concept stage, with ongoing validation under various experimental conditions to simulate AD and PD environments.
