Proprietary nucleic acid detection platform combining AEGIS, SAMRS, ARTs, and DiPLA technologies to enable sensitive, multiplexed field detection of GMO DNA/RNA in 30 minutes at under $2 per assay, without specialized personnel or sample transport.

Overview

This offering leverages Firebird Biomolecular Sciences' patented nucleic acid technologies to enable rapid, field-deployable detection of genetically modified organism (GMO) DNA and RNA in plant materials. The platform integrates four proprietary innovations designed to overcome the limitations of conventional molecular detection methods. Together, these technologies allow highly multiplexed analysis of genetic markers directly from raw leaf samples in approximately 30 minutes, at a target cost of less than $2 per assay, without requiring laboratory infrastructure, cold-chain logistics, or highly trained personnel.

The core value proposition is the ability to deliver point-of-need genetic quality assessment of plant materials with sensitivity and multiplexing levels that exceed what standard PCR or amplification-free methods can achieve. This capability addresses a critical gap in agricultural biotechnology: on-site verification of GMO content and genetic integrity without the delays and costs associated with centralized laboratory testing.

Technical specifications

Key technologies:

  • Artificially Expanded Genetic Information Systems (AEGIS): A redesigned genetic alphabet that supports clean amplification of target nucleic acids. AEGIS improved the sensitivity of amplification-free viral load assays from 300,000 virions/mL to 8 virions/mL, demonstrating its ability to dramatically enhance detection limits.
  • Self-Avoiding Molecular Recognition Systems (SAMRS): Enables highly multiplexed detection of more than 30 targets simultaneously without cross-reactivity, a significant advancement over conventional probe systems.
  • Aminoxy Reversible Terminators (ARTs): Allows discrimination of single nucleotide variations, enabling precise identification of specific genetic markers.
  • Displaceable Probe Loop Amplification (DiPLA): An isothermal amplification method that has been validated in point-of-care COVID tests and field detection of arboviruses in single trapped mosquitoes.

Performance targets:

  • Multiplexed detection of approximately 30 or more targets in a single assay
  • Results in approximately 30 minutes from raw leaf sample
  • Target assay cost under $2 per reaction
  • Minimal sample processing requirements suitable for field conditions

Validation history:

  • Field analysis of approximately 20 arboviruses in trapped mosquitoes
  • Workplace entry COVID testing with 4–8x multiplexing, with approximately 13 million kits sold
  • Clinical laboratory tests including viral load assays for HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C (lifetime sales of approximately $1 billion)
  • DiPLA-based COVID assay received European Union regulatory approval in 2021
  • ARTs licensed for enzyme-assisted DNA synthesis and next-generation sequencing
  • SAMRS licensed to GenePath, Insilixa, and others for multiplexed nucleic acid detection
Technology readiness level

The individual component technologies have been validated across multiple real-world settings, including clinical diagnostics, field pathogen surveillance, and pandemic-scale testing programs. AEGIS, SAMRS, ARTs, and DiPLA have each demonstrated commercial viability through licensing agreements, regulatory approvals, and high-volume product sales.

However, the specific application of this platform to GMO detection in plant materials has not yet been validated. The consortium previously explored this application approximately a decade ago in collaboration with another agricultural partner, but the project was discontinued when the partner scientist departed. Reawakening and adapting these technologies for agricultural GMO analysis would require specification alignment with the partner's detection targets and assay requirements. The consortium follows a design-first workflow: identifying customer specifications, including multiplexing levels, sensitivity demands, and per-assay cost constraints, then engineering an integrated solution from the available technology components.
