NanoBio Designs offers a portable, enzyme-free genetic detection platform using DNA-coated microparticles for rapid GMO testing. The system delivers results in under 15 minutes at under $35 per test, detecting multiple traits simultaneously in crude samples without amplification. Designed for on-site use by grain distributors, seed producers, and testing labs, it provides a simplified alternative to PCR-based methods.

Overview

NanoBio Designs has developed a portable, enzyme-free genetic detection platform that uses pre-programmed microparticles to identify specific DNA sequences in crude samples. The technology addresses limitations of traditional PCR methods by eliminating the need for target amplification, reducing assay time, and lowering cost per test. Designed for the agricultural supply chain, the platform enables rapid, on-site verification of GMO presence and composition in seed and grain samples. The primary application, ExpresSeed, targets grain distributors, seed producers, and testing laboratories that need to comply with regulatory and labeling requirements such as Non-GMO standards. The system supports multiplexed detection of two or more traits simultaneously and delivers digital results with Bluetooth connectivity for data tracking.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Enzyme-free detection using DNA-coated microparticles pre-programmed to bind specific target sequences
  • Consumable cartridge paired with a compact, cube-shaped hardware device that images DNA-particle complexes
  • End-to-end assay time of less than 15 minutes from sample receival to result
  • Cost per test under $35
  • Minimal sample preparation required; works with crude genomic samples
  • Multiplexing capability for simultaneous detection of multiple traits
  • Digital readout with Bluetooth compatibility for external data tracking
  • Off-the-shelf components for efficient manufacturing and assembly
  • Validated targets include CaMV35s promoter, GA21, MIR162, and MON89788, with controls such as adh1 in corn and Lectin in soybeans
Technology readiness level

The platform has progressed from benchtop processes to a commercial prototype. Proof-of-concept testing demonstrated 100% accuracy in distinguishing GMO inserts in corn and soybean seed samples. The current commercial prototype has shown the ability to complete assays in under 15 minutes while detecting two or more traits simultaneously. Next-stage validation includes qualitative presence/absence testing with a statistically appropriate sample set using the commercial prototype, followed by quantitative sensitivity optimization at thresholds of 100%, 50%, 10%, and less than 1% GM composition. Future development will expand testing to non-laboratory environments and additional sample matrices such as leaf tissue and soil. The company is actively seeking industry partnerships for pilot validation, target sequence support, and expanded multiplexing capabilities.

About NanoBio Designs, Inc

NanoBio Designs, Inc. is an agbioscience startup that develops portable, enzyme-free genetic detection platforms for the agricultural industry. Founded in 2017, the company utilizes patent-pending microparticle pairing technology to identify specific genetic markers in crude DNA samples. By leveraging DNA-coated nanoparticles, their platform offers a simplified, ultra-fast alternative to complex Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing. The system is designed to provide quantitative results by converting the capture of target DNA and particle complexes into measurable data, allowing for decentralized, onsite testing without the need for high-tech laboratory environments or specialized expertise.

The company's primary solution, known as ExpresSeed, addresses critical needs for grain distributors, seed producers, and testing labs facing increasing regulatory oversight regarding genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the food supply chain. By enabling proactive, real-time verification of genetic composition, the technology helps supply chain stakeholders meet standards such as Non-GMO labeling requirements more efficiently. NanoBio Designs currently conducts industry pilots to validate its detection platforms and is actively seeking partnerships with early-adopting customers, distributors, and joint ventures to expand its capabilities across various agricultural and biotechnology markets.
