Innovative hydrogel using fish collagen and κ-carrageenan for microencapsulation of probiotics, enhancing cell viability and shelf life in low pH beverages. This anionic hydrogel maintains integrity in acidic media and releases probiotics in alkaline conditions.
This solution involves a novel hydrogel composed of fish collagen and κ-carrageenan designed for the encapsulation of probiotics. The combination of these materials results in a hydrogel with enhanced mechanical strength and stability, making it suitable for use in low pH beverages. The hydrogel's anionic properties allow it to remain intact in acidic environments, such as gastric acid, and to swell and dissociate in alkaline conditions like those found in the intestines. This behavior ensures effective release of encapsulated probiotics, potentially improving their viability and shelf life.
This technology is currently at TRL 2, indicating that it is in the early stages of development. The primary focus is on analyzing the properties, morphology, and efficiency of the hydrogel beads, with further experiments planned to test their survivability and performance in low pH beverages and simulated gastrointestinal tracts.
Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology is a public STEM-focused institute and autonomous unit of the MSU system in Iligan City. Industry engages through the Premier Research Institute of Science and Mathematics (PRISM), whose technical and laboratory services are institutionalized to serve internal and external clients. On campus, FAB LAB Mindanao enables rapid prototyping, and the iDEYA Center of Innovation and Technopreneurship runs a technology business incubator that links startups with mentors and partners. Research and extension are coordinated by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension. Funding comes from national agencies such as the Department of Science and Technology and the Commission on Higher Education; a dedicated technology transfer and IP support office facilitates licensing and commercialization.
