The Continuous Flow Processing Facility ("Flow Lab", https://atami.oregonstate.edu/atami-tools/continuous-flow-processing) within the Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Insitutute (ATAMI, https://atami.oregonstate.edu/atami-tools) at Oregon State University is a user facility focused on the applications of flow chemistry (continuous flow processing) as applied to chemical synthesis, characterization, separations, and process development. ATAMI is an open-access user facility that hosts incubator space, shared-tools, academic labs, and support staff.

The Flow Lab has an automated flow control platform with four HPLC pumps, a valve control system (up to 16 inputs), thermal reactor (<350 C), photochemical reactor, in-line analysis (FTIR, UV-vis), and sample dispensing. In addition, the Flow Lab is equipped with addtional instrumentation, along with ATAMI's numerous tools (see links above).

For those unfamiliar with flow chemistry (flow processing), it leverages a number of chemical engineering concepts to improve mass/heat transfer, safer reaction handling, potential waste reduction, easier process scaling, reduced byproduct formation, access to unique reaction pathways, and process intensification.

We have demonstrated the system capabiilites in the synthesis of both organic (heterocycles, porphyrins, noncanonical amino acids, thiolations) and inorganic (nanoparticles, MOFs) products.

As a user-facility, we offer several routes to engagement for those interested in flow chemistry, but unsure about the investment (https://atami.oregonstate.edu/main/usage-and-service-rates). The easiest option is sponsored research in which our staff will work closely with a partner to develop process goals and deliverables. Another option is Flow Lab training to use the system as needed by partnering staff.

About Oregon State University

Oregon State University is a comprehensive public research university and Oregon’s land‑grant institution, with a main campus in Corvallis and a statewide footprint. Industry partners tap a statewide Extension network and county offices to pilot and scale solutions with communities and companies across Oregon. A coastal marine science campus in Newport anchors ocean research and provides access to open‑ocean wave‑energy test ranges and grid‑connected infrastructure under development nearby, enabling sea‑to‑shore prototyping. Field stations and university‑managed research forests support long‑term trials and product validation in real‑world environments. A dedicated technology transfer office and the OSU Advantage programs—including the Advantage Accelerator—streamline IP, licensing, startup formation, and industry agreements.
