A curated collection of over 700 fungal endophytes isolated from wild Spanish Arabidopsis plants is being screened for isolates that antagonize pathogenic Fusarium strains. Promising candidates will be characterized, optimized, and developed as active ingredients for biological crop protection products.
Fusarium species are among the most damaging fungal pathogens in agriculture, causing yield losses across cereals, vegetables, and other crops worldwide. This project leverages a proprietary collection of more than 700 fungal endophytes isolated from wild Arabidopsis plants in Spain to identify novel biocontrol agents against Fusarium pathogens. Fungal endophytes colonize plant tissues internally without causing disease, and many are known to compete with pathogens, produce antimicrobial metabolites, and trigger natural defense responses in their host plants. The initiative aims to translate this biological diversity into active ingredients for next-generation crop protection products that reduce dependence on synthetic fungicides.

The project is currently at an early-to-mid research stage. The endophyte collection is established and partially characterized, and the research team has demonstrated proof-of-concept results with related isolates against other fungal pathogens and pests. The proposed 24-month work plan moves candidates from high-throughput in vitro screening through in planta validation, metabolite extraction, and genome-level characterization, positioning the most promising isolates for transition toward formulation, field trials, and commercial development as biological crop protection products.
Plant Response Inc. is a biotechnology company that develops and markets biological solutions designed to advance and restore agricultural ecosystems. Founded in 2008 and originally spun out from research at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, the company specializes in leveraging plant innate immunity, physiology, and nutrient use efficiency to enhance crop yields. Its portfolio includes biological products that address key agricultural challenges such as drought tolerance, abiotic stress, disease defense, and biocontrol. By bridging the gap between pioneering research and commercial application, the company seeks to provide sustainable soil health solutions that improve nutrient use efficiency for growers globally.
Following its acquisition by The Mosaic Company in February 2022, Plant Response operates as part of a larger strategy to scale and distribute advanced crop nutrition and soil health products. Before the acquisition, the company grew through its own strategic expansions, including the mergers with Koch Biological Solutions and the acquisitions of Pathway BioLogic and WISErg. These integrations allowed the company to broaden its biological product portfolio, enhance formulation capabilities, and utilize genetic-level insights to drive product performance. Today, the business maintains a focus on providing science-backed agricultural biologicals to support farmers in optimizing productivity and addressing the impacts of a changing climate.
