Multilayered graphene-enhanced polymer coatings designed to provide high-performance gas and moisture barriers for food packaging applications. Supports dry and aqueous food products with varying pH levels and oil content, enabling sustainable packaging alternatives for modified atmospheric packaging (MAP) and other food preservation needs.

Overview

This solution involves multilayered protective coatings composed of graphene-enhanced polymers combined with a protective layer to deliver efficient gas and moisture barrier performance for food packaging. The technology is designed to meet high barrier requirements for both dry and aqueous food products with varying pH levels and oil content. By leveraging the proven barrier properties of graphene sheets within a polymer matrix, the coatings offer a pathway to more sustainable packaging solutions that extend shelf life and reduce food waste.

The approach is grounded in extensive prior research on graphene-based barrier films, including successful development of graphene and nanoclay-enhanced poly(vinyl alcohol) coatings for modified atmospheric packaging (MAP) of natural fiber meat trays. Those coatings demonstrated excellent oxygen barrier performance and moisture resistance, providing a strong foundation for translating the concept to new polymer systems.

Technology readiness level

The underlying barrier technology has been validated through prior development of graphene and nanoclay-enhanced poly(vinyl alcohol) coatings for modified atmospheric packaging of natural fiber meat trays, demonstrating strong oxygen barrier and moisture resistance performance. A one-year research plan is proposed to adapt and optimize the approach for new polymer systems, including parametric studies to determine optimal graphene dosages and film thickness, comprehensive structural and performance characterization, and final evaluation of optimized multilayered films conducted in collaboration with a client's R&D team. The current stage represents applied research transitioning toward client-specific validation and scale-up.
