This innovative HPPD herbicide safener utilizes novel ester-substituted cyclohexenone derivatives to enhance detoxification enzyme activity, improving herbicide metabolism and reducing impact on non-target plants.

Overview

The HPPD herbicide safener is a groundbreaking agrochemical innovation designed to enhance the detoxification activity of enzymes, thereby improving the metabolism of herbicides and minimizing their impact on non-target plants. Developed using the parent skeleton cyclohexenone, derived from the natural product abscisic acid (ABA), this safener combines the parent skeleton with active moieties of commercialized safeners. This approach promises to offer a more selective and effective solution for agricultural applications.

Technical specifications
  • Novel Design: Utilizes ester-substituted cyclohexenone derivatives.
  • Mechanism of Action: Enhances detoxification enzyme activity, specifically targeting the GST, GSH, and HPPD pathways.
  • Development Process: Involves molecular structure comparison and molecular docking to evaluate safener activity.
  • Fragment Splicing Methodology: Employs fragment splicing in drug design to achieve high activity and selectivity in agrochemical compounds.
Technology readiness level

The technology is currently at TRL 3, indicating that active research and development are underway with experimental proof of concept achieved. Future validation steps include synthesis of approximately 60 compounds, bioassays to determine enzymatic activity, and molecular docking studies, with an expected timeline of up to 3 years for completion.

About Northeast Agricultural University

Northeast Agricultural University is a major public agricultural university in Harbin, China, with a research-intensive profile and strong ties to regional production. Experimental farms, greenhouses, and field stations provide testbeds for cold-region conditions, while on-campus labs support analysis, prototyping, and pilot evaluation. Industry collaboration is organized through university-industry joint labs and demonstration bases that connect faculty with producers and processors across the Northeast grain belt. Research is supported by competitive national and provincial funding, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China and programs from national ministries. A dedicated technology transfer office supports IP, licensing, and industry contracting.
