Naturally derived hydroxycinnamic acid amine compounds extracted from maize samples are being investigated as defense metabolites against biotic stresses. The research builds on benzoxazinoid chemistry, such as DIMBOA, to identify new phytoalexin candidates for pathogen defense applications.
This research focuses on hydroxycinnamic acid amines extracted from maize samples that show potential antibiosis activity and may function as phytoalexins, which are plant-produced defense compounds activated in response to pathogen attack. The work is grounded in the established chemistry of benzoxazinoids, a well-known class of maize defense metabolites that includes DIMBOA and provides protection against biotic stresses such as insects, fungi, and bacteria. By exploring hydroxycinnamic acid amine derivatives within this defense framework, the project aims to identify new bioactive molecules that could support crop protection, natural antimicrobial development, and sustainable agricultural inputs.
The project is at an early-stage discovery phase. Compounds have been identified in maize extracts, but validation procedures and future validation plans have not yet been fully defined. Further work is needed to isolate specific molecules, characterize their structures, and confirm antibiosis and phytoalexin activity through controlled bioassays against relevant plant pathogens.
