Research initiative to improve oxygen barrier properties of PET films using polymer/clay nanocomposites made from GRAS-listed materials. Aims to reduce oxygen permeability in packaging through advanced nanocomposite formulations, with future work evaluating mechanical property optimization for commercial packaging applications.

Overview

This research focuses on improving the gas barrier behavior of polymer/clay nanocomposite PET films for packaging applications. The core hypothesis is that combining polymers with clay nanocomposites using materials from the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) list can significantly reduce oxygen permeability in PET films. By evaluating various materials, additives, and coatings, the project seeks to identify formulations that enhance packaging properties critical to extending product shelf life and maintaining quality.

The work addresses a key challenge in the packaging industry: developing effective oxygen barrier solutions that are both food-safe and compatible with existing manufacturing processes. Reduced oxygen permeability in packaging films helps preserve freshness, prevent oxidation, and extend the shelf life of packaged goods.

Technical specifications

Research approach:

  • Evaluation of polymer/clay nanocomposite formulations using GRAS-listed materials
  • Analysis of different materials, additives, and coatings to determine their effect on oxygen permeability reduction
  • Comparison of multiple formulation techniques to identify optimal barrier performance
  • Future validation will assess the combination of polymers and clays with attention to mechanical properties alongside barrier behavior

Key considerations:

  • Materials selected from the GRAS list ensure food-contact safety
  • Nanocomposite structure leverages the barrier-enhancing properties of dispersed clay particles within the polymer matrix
  • Multiple material combinations are being screened to identify the most effective formulations
Technology readiness level

This research is currently at an early-to-mid stage of development. Initial validation has involved evaluating and analyzing different materials for their barrier-enhancing properties. Future validation efforts are planned to further assess polymer/clay combinations, with particular emphasis on mechanical properties in addition to gas barrier performance. Further development and testing will be needed before commercial readiness.

About NABACO.Inc

Nabaco Inc. is an agricultural materials science company that develops sustainable, post-harvest processing aids for the fresh produce industry. Its flagship product, NatuWrap, is an edible, food-grade, temporary barrier coating designed to extend the shelf life and storage quality of fruits and vegetables. Developed by a team of scientists and industry veterans, the technology is formulated to integrate seamlessly into existing agricultural packing lines without requiring specialized equipment. The company utilizes a patented, self-ordering process to create thin, protective barriers that manage gas exchange, moisture loss, and decay, offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional waxes and coatings.

The company’s solutions address significant challenges in the global food supply chain, including food loss, waste, and profitability hurdles for growers, packers, and retailers. By reducing scuffing, bruising, and spoilage, NatuWrap helps maintain consistent produce quality from harvest through distribution, ultimately supporting more sustainable farming practices and reducing the environmental impact associated with food waste. Founded in 2018 and headquartered in San Marcos, Texas, Nabaco collaborates with partners in the produce industry to provide customizable, crop-specific protection formulas that adapt to changing harvest conditions and operational needs.
