Laser surface texturing for enhanced product evacuation

Technology
In development
Company

Laser surface texturing enhances product evacuation from packaging by etching micro-patterns that reduce adhesion and facilitate smoother flow of viscous products. Compatible with a wide range of materials, it meets FDA and RecyClass standards, with current TRL 5.

Overview

Laser surface texturing offers a revolutionary approach to enhancing the evacuation of viscous or semi-solid products from packaging, such as tubes and bottles. By employing high-precision laser ablation, micro-patterns are etched onto interior surfaces, significantly reducing product adhesion and altering surface energy and topography. This innovation facilitates smoother product flow, minimizing residue and addressing consumer frustration associated with product waste. The technology is chemically inert, compatible with a variety of materials, and withstands conventional manufacturing conditions, aligning with FDA food safety standards and RecyClass recycling guidelines.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • High-precision laser ablation creates micro-patterns that reduce surface adhesion
  • Compatible with materials like HDPE, laminates, and EVOH-layered tubes
  • Withstands temperatures up to 250°C, suitable for conventional manufacturing
  • Complies with FDA food safety and RecyClass recycling standards
  • Enhances recyclability by reducing contaminated waste

Applications:

  • Pharmaceutical packaging
  • Oral care product packaging
  • Any packaging requiring efficient evacuation of viscous or semi-solid contents
Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at TRL 5, with plans to progress to TRL 7. Initial feasibility studies are underway, focusing on the compatibility of laser texturing with various packaging materials. Prototyping and lab testing phases will optimize surface patterns and evaluate evacuation efficiency across different product viscosities. Future field testing will validate performance and scalability, leading to a deliverable prototype ready for regulatory approval and potential co-development.
