University

Development of a chemical-free, biodegradable process for encapsulating hydrophobic active ingredients with cyclodextrin, achieving over 90% efficiency. Applicable for essential oils and other liquid actives, offering enhanced stability and controlled release.

Overview

This innovative solution involves the microencapsulation of hydrophobic active ingredients using cyclodextrin as a wall material. The process is chemical-free and biodegradable, aiming for encapsulation efficiencies exceeding 90%. This technique is particularly beneficial for stabilizing essential oils and other liquid active ingredients, enhancing their stability and providing controlled release properties.

Technical specifications

The microencapsulation process utilizes cyclodextrin to form a protective layer around the active ingredients. Key features include:

  • High encapsulation efficiency exceeding 90%, ensuring minimal loss of active ingredients
  • Chemical-free and biodegradable process, making it environmentally sustainable
  • Effective for a range of hydrophobic ingredients, particularly essential oils
  • Tested for encapsulation efficiency, release kinetics, and food safety

Future validation steps involve preparing emulsions to ensure proper dispersion of active ingredients, followed by drying. Emulsion rheology, particle size, and powder properties will be monitored to optimize the process further.

Technology readiness level

The technology is currently at TRL 4, indicating that it has been validated in a laboratory setting. Future work will focus on refining the process and scaling up for commercial applications.
