Innovative DLC coatings utilizing PVD and PACVD processes to minimize adhesion in polyisocyanurate foam applications, enhancing production efficiency by reducing the need for release agents.
The Fraunhofer LBF presents an advanced solution for minimizing adhesion in polyisocyanurate foam applications using modified DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coatings. This technology is designed to enhance production processes by reducing the need for release agents, which are traditionally required due to high surface gloss. Our approach leverages PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) and PACVD (Plasma-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition) techniques to create a non-stick, wear-resistant layer with tailored surface roughness and topography.

Benefits:
This technology is currently at TRL 5, having been validated in relevant environments with further trials planned to optimize surface parameters and composition. The projected timeframe for complete validation is approximately one year, contingent upon experimental setup and laboratory equipment preparation.
Fraunhofer LBF is a mid-sized applied-research institute of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, with around 350 employees and a strongly practice-oriented character. It works directly with OEMs, suppliers, SMEs, universities, and research organizations, assembling interdisciplinary teams around customer needs. Dedicated testing and validation infrastructure supports product development from material selection and component evaluation through system integration and operational monitoring. Funding combines industrial contract research with competitive support from German federal ministries such as BMBF and BMWK, alongside European programs. An innovation and transfer function supports project development, IP management, and commercialization.
