MunasqaRR is the first elite soybean cultivar confirmed resistant to multiple Macrophomina phaseolina isolates under controlled and field conditions. This research delivers QTL mapping, molecular markers, and transcriptomic insights to accelerate charcoal rot resistance breeding and reduce crop losses sustainably.
Charcoal rot (CR), caused by Macrophomina phaseolina (Mp), is a devastating soybean disease that causes significant yield losses worldwide. MunasqaRR is the first elite soybean cultivar reported as resistant to multiple Mp isolates under both controlled and field conditions across different regions. This research program provides a deep understanding of the genetic, biochemical, and molecular resistance mechanisms in MunasqaRR, enabling breeders to introduce durable CR resistance into other germplasm and supporting sustainable soybean production.
Research approach and key features:
The resistance of MunasqaRR to multiple Mp isolates has been validated under controlled conditions and in field trials across multiple regions. The in vitro interaction assay is operational and reproducible. QTL mapping and molecular marker identification are currently in progress using a RIL population. Transcriptomic and biochemical validation studies are planned as the next development phase. Outputs—validated QTLs, molecular markers, and characterized resistance mechanisms—are positioned to integrate directly into soybean breeding pipelines for charcoal rot management.
Universidad Nacional de Rosario is a comprehensive public research university serving approximately 86,000 students with about 7,000 professors and 716 research teams. Industry partners access co‑located national research institutes through the CONICET Rosario scientific and technological center, with laboratories embedded on UNR campuses. UNR connects with the regional innovation ecosystem via the Polo Tecnológico Rosario—a public‑private technology park—and through a dedicated office that structures collaborative R&D, contract services, and testing. Clinical education and applied research are strengthened by integration with teaching hospitals and care delivered at the Eva Perón and Centenario hospitals. Research is supported by competitive national science and innovation programs, including CONICET; a technology transfer office manages IP protection, patent licensing, and industry agreements.
