Exploratory research project to identify and validate novel myxobacteria strains as biocontrol agents against soilborne plant pathogens. Leverages the organisms' secondary metabolites (antimicrobial compounds) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that stabilize soil aggregation. Aims to develop a novel microbial pesticide for crops including wheat, cotton, maize, vegetables, and fruit.
This project investigates myxobacteria (Order Myxococcales) as dual-purpose biocontrol agents for sustainable agriculture. These soil microbes are known to secrete secondary metabolites with antimicrobial and antifungal properties, as well as extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that enhance soil aggregation, moisture retention, and nutrient availability. The research aims to screen, isolate, sequence, and experimentally validate novel myxobacterial strains from underexplored natural environments and existing culture collections. The ultimate goal is to develop a novel microbial pesticide capable of combating major soilborne plant pathogens such as Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Verticillium, and Phytophthora species, which currently cause 50-75% yield losses in key crops including wheat, cotton, maize, vegetables, fruit, and ornamental plants.
Research approach and methodology:
Key advantages of myxobacteria:
This is an early-stage exploratory research project (TRL 1-3). Preliminary work has established the genomic basis for myxobacterial metabolite diversity through comparative analysis of existing databases. The research team has prior experience in culturing, sequencing, and performing high-throughput comparative genomic studies on myxobacterial organisms. Future work will involve strain acquisition, isolation from natural environments, wet-lab validation of antimicrobial properties, biocontrol efficacy testing against target pathogens, and functional genomic characterization. The project represents a foundational step toward developing a commercially viable microbial pesticide.
