A nano-encapsulated thymol disinfectant that provides continuous surface protection for up to two weeks. The active ingredient is gradually released from a cosmetic-grade polyester shell, achieving three-to-four log reduction against bacteria and viral mimetics on porous and non-porous surfaces.

Overview

This technology delivers long-acting surface disinfection using nano-encapsulated thymol and other natural essential oils enclosed within a self-forming polyester nanostructured shell. The gradual, metered release of the active ingredient provides sustained antimicrobial and antiviral protection for up to two weeks on frequently contacted surfaces such as door handles, countertops, and other hard or porous materials. Designed as a natural product alternative to conventional disinfectants, the formulation is hypoallergenic and well suited for healthcare, hospitality, educational, and public-use environments where continuous surface hygiene is essential.

Technical specifications
  • Core active ingredient: Thymol and other natural essential oils encapsulated within a cosmetic-grade polyester nanostructured shell
  • Release mechanism: Metered, gradual release of the active from the polyester shell, providing local antimicrobial action over an extended period
  • Efficacy: Three-to-four log reduction in bacterial viability and viral infectivity
  • Validated against: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, and enveloped and non-enveloped phage viruses used as mimetics for SARS-CoV-2 and polioviruses
  • Surface compatibility: Effective on both porous and non-porous surfaces
  • Duration of protection: Upwards of two weeks without re-application
  • Safety profile: Hypoallergenic, natural product approach suitable for prolonged skin and surface contact
  • Delivery system: Atomized nano-particle suspension designed to deposit a uniform micro-layer with sufficient particle density for complete surface coverage
  • Stability: Particle interior shields the active ingredient from oxidation and environmental degradation, supporting extended shelf life
Technology readiness level

The technology has been validated through laboratory construction of the nano-encapsulated thymol and essential oil formulations, with efficacy testing completed against multiple bacterial species and viral mimetic agents. Three-to-four log reductions in bacterial viability and viral infectivity have been demonstrated. Remaining development activities include scaling the formulation to commercial production levels, establishing both real-time and accelerated stability data, and finalizing a propellant-based atomizing delivery system for uniform surface application. Preliminary stability trials indicate strong resistance to oxidation and environmental stressors due to the protective particle architecture.
