A fungus-derived pyranone compound offering both curative and systemic activity against plant bacterial diseases. Unlike conventional protectant chemicals, this natural compound can suppress soil-borne bacterial pathogens when applied as a foliar spray, enabling more effective and flexible disease management in agriculture.
Plant bacterial diseases pose a significant challenge to crop production, and most available chemical controls offer only protective activity, meaning they must be applied before infection occurs. This proposal presents a naturally derived pyranone compound, isolated from a fungal source, that demonstrates both curative and systemic activity against plant bacterial pathogens. Curative activity means the compound can treat infections after they have begun, while systemic activity means it moves within the plant to protect tissues beyond the application site. Together, these properties allow the compound to suppress soil-borne bacterial diseases when applied via foliar spray, a major practical advantage over existing protectant-only chemicals.
The compound has been identified and confirmed through in vivo bioassays demonstrating both curative and systemic activity. Further development will include expanded efficacy testing across additional bacterial pathogens and crops, formulation optimization for foliar delivery, and field-scale validation to advance toward commercial crop protection applications.
