A novel multi-component barrier coating for fiber-based food packaging, offering water and grease resistance using renewable biopolymers. This solution avoids synthetic polymers and fluorinated chemistry, ensuring food safety and regulatory compliance.

Overview

The naturally derived composite barrier coating is an innovative solution for enhancing fiber-based food packaging. This multi-component surface coating achieves simultaneous water and grease resistance by utilizing naturally occurring biopolymers and resin. The coating features a functional bilayer architecture: one layer provides high grease resistance and primes the substrate, while the second delivers superior water vapor and liquid water barrier performance. All materials used are sourced from renewable origins, avoiding synthetic polymerization, fluorinated chemistry, and modified polymer backbones, making it a sustainable option for food packaging.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Utilizes naturally occurring biopolymers and resins
  • Functional bilayer architecture for dual barrier performance
  • High grease resistance and significant reduction in water vapor transmission and absorption
  • Complies with food-contact safety standards and emerging EPR frameworks
  • Designed for thermal stability and process compatibility
  • End-of-life compliance for repulpability and compostability

The coating has been validated independently in peer-reviewed studies, achieving top-tier performance metrics. It fits within statutory exemptions for naturally occurring polymers, setting it apart from competing bioplastic solutions.

Technology readiness level

The technology is currently at TRL 4, with individual components at TRL 4–5. The proposed architecture is ready for further validation and scale-up. Future validation includes lab-scale trials and pilot-line runs, supported by technical direction from the solution's developers, ensuring optimal performance and cost-effectiveness.

About Constraint Layer Research

Constraint Layer Research provides specialized technical services based on a proprietary constraint-synthesis methodology. The firm maps the physical, regulatory, and operational constraints of complex problems across sectors such as defense, aerospace, and life sciences. By systematically eliminating approaches that violate these constraints, they deliver validated architectures or proofs of feasibility. Their work includes developing AI hiring systems that are structurally incapable of discrimination, as well as tools for generative engine optimization, citation integrity auditing, and content restructuring to ensure AI systems can accurately extract and verify information.

These services enable organizations to manage high-stakes operations while maintaining behavioral integrity and regulatory compliance. Their Structural Fidelity Framework, for example, allows for model-agnostic enforcement of epistemic honesty and truth-preservation in AI systems without requiring model retraining. By providing immutable audit trails and real-time validation, the company assists clients in meeting stringent requirements like the EU AI Act and SOC-2 reporting, addressing critical needs in AI governance and evidence-based decision-making.
