Phora Biosciences develops innovative insecticidal proteins using deep learning and synthetic biology to enhance specificity and efficiency, providing environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional insecticides.
Phora Biosciences is pioneering the development of novel insecticidal proteins by leveraging deep learning and synthetic biology. These proteins are designed to mimic the mechanisms of action of fungal proteins, which are known for their specificity, high efficiency, and environmentally friendly profiles. By focusing on these unique mechanisms, the new proteins aim to reduce cross-resistance compared to traditional chemical insecticides.
The development process involves computational protein design tools to create proteins with desirable mechanisms of action while ensuring patentability through novel DNA or amino acid sequences. The workflow includes validating enzyme active sites, computationally recoding genes to generate new protein candidates, and in silico evaluation for structural and biochemical compliance. Successful candidates are expressed in engineered strains, purified, and tested in vivo on mites and lepidopteran larvae.
Currently at TRL 3, this technology is at the stage of experimental proof of concept. The next steps include gene synthesis, protein purification, and in vivo testing, with a planned timeline of one year to complete these validations.
