A fiber-based packaging solution with biobased superhydrophobic inner coating and interlayer for liquid detergents, offering exceptional water and oxygen barrier properties to extend shelf life to approximately 18 months. Designed for recyclability and repulpability, this innovation supports the global shift away from single-use plastics in detergent packaging.

Overview

This research proposes a sustainable, fiber-based packaging solution for liquid detergents that replaces conventional plastic containers with environmentally friendly alternatives. The packaging combines a biobased superhydrophobic inner layer coating with a biobased interlayer integrated into fiber layers, delivering exceptional water and oxygen barrier properties. The design targets an extended shelf life of approximately 18 months for liquid detergent products while ensuring the materials can be recovered through standard recycling or repulping processes. This innovation aligns with the growing demand for plastic-free packaging and supports corporate sustainability commitments across the household products supply chain.

Technical specifications
  • Fiber-based primary structure replacing conventional plastic containers for liquid detergents
  • Biobased superhydrophobic inner layer coating providing exceptional water and oxygen barrier qualities to protect product integrity
  • Biobased interlayer integrated between fiber layers to enhance oxygen barrier performance
  • Recyclable and repulpable design ensuring materials can be recovered through standard end-of-line recycling processes
  • Layered laminate construction prepared via standardized pulp processing and compression molding or alternative forming approaches
  • Shelf-life performance validated through accelerated shelf-life analysis to confirm approximately 18-month product protection
Technology readiness level

The technology is currently at an early-to-mid stage of development. Planned validation activities include purchasing and preparing raw materials for paper pulp, preparing predetermined biopolymers, and fabricating the layered laminate material. Lab-scale packaged product shelf-life analysis using accelerated testing methods will be conducted, alongside recyclability and biodegradability analysis. The project also includes development of intellectual property and preparation of policy frameworks to standardize packaging sales and end-of-line recycling. Further scale-up and commercial validation will be required before market deployment.

About Council for Scientific and Industrial Research

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is South Africa’s national applied research organization, operating multi-site campuses with a mission-driven, contract research model that serves government and industry. Industry engagement centers on co-located laboratories, accredited testing, and pilot-scale platforms that help companies de-risk scale-up and validate compliance. Prototyping workshops and demonstration testbeds support rapid design–build–test cycles, and on-campus collaboration spaces enable supplier development. Research is backed by South Africa’s public research funding and competitive industry contracts, with added support from international development and research programs. A dedicated technology transfer office manages IP, licensing, and spinout formation, with streamlined pathways for NDAs and facility access.
