NutriEdit tomato uses CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to improve tomato shelf life, increase GABA content, and enhance Vitamin D levels. This innovation benefits farmers, consumers, and the food industry by offering a nutritionally enhanced tomato with extended freshness.

Overview

The NutriEdit tomato is a genetically enhanced variety developed using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology to address key nutritional and agricultural challenges. This advanced tomato offers improved shelf life, increased levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and enhanced Vitamin D content, providing significant health benefits. By targeting specific genes responsible for fruit firmness and nutritional content, the NutriEdit tomato is designed to benefit farmers with longer-lasting produce, while offering consumers a healthier dietary option.

Technical specifications
  • Improved Shelf Life: By knocking out the pectate lyase (PL) gene, the NutriEdit tomato maintains firmness, extending its shelf life without affecting ripening.
  • Increased GABA Content: Editing the SlGAD3 gene enhances the tomato's GABA levels, beneficial for managing hypertension and diabetes.
  • Enhanced Vitamin D Levels: Through CRISPR editing of the Sl7-DR2 gene, the tomato is enriched with Vitamin D, supporting overall health.
  • Methodology: The development involves multiplex gene editing using validated guide RNAs, agrobacterium-mediated transformation, and selection for transgene-free homozygous mutants.
Technology readiness level

The NutriEdit tomato is currently at Technology Readiness Level 3, indicating experimental proof of concept. The research team has successfully developed transgenic lines and plans to further validate and refine the technology through multiplex gene editing and transformation to achieve commercial viability.

About Tamil Nadu Agricultural University

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University is a comprehensive state agricultural university headquartered in Coimbatore, combining education, research, and statewide extension at scale. Co-located experimental farms, commodity research stations, and pilot processing facilities provide industry with sites for field trials, prototyping, and product validation. An extensive extension network connects faculty with growers and supply chains, while proximity to Tamil Nadu’s agri‑machinery, textiles, and food‑processing base supports collaboration and talent pipelines. Research is supported by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, the Government of Tamil Nadu, and competitive national programs such as DST and DBT. A dedicated technology transfer office and agribusiness incubation services facilitate IP, licensing, startup formation, and contract research.
