Innovative core-shell composite material combining PLA, PVA, starch, and curcumin for eco-friendly food packaging. Offers superior mechanical strength, barrier properties, and biodegradability over traditional aluminum foils.

Overview

The PLA-coated starch/PVA/curcumin composite is a groundbreaking development in sustainable food packaging. This core-shell structured material leverages the mechanical strength and barrier properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), the biodegradability of starch, the flexibility and adhesion of polylactic acid (PLA), and the antioxidant properties of curcumin. Designed as a sustainable alternative to aluminum foils, this composite offers improved performance in packaging technologies with enhanced environmental benefits.

Technical specifications
  • Core-shell structure: Integrates PVA, starch, PLA, and curcumin for optimal performance.
  • Mechanical and thermal stability: Provides superior strength and stability compared to conventional materials.
  • Barrier properties: Effective moisture and gas barrier, enhancing food preservation.
  • Biodegradability: Utilizes natural polymers for a reduced environmental footprint.
  • Antioxidant and antimicrobial: Curcumin's properties enhance food safety and longevity.
Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 2, this technology has been demonstrated through experimental models. Future validation includes optimizing the composite composition and testing its physiochemical characteristics, biodegradability, and antimicrobial activity. The composite will be further developed for food packaging applications, focusing on barrier properties and permeability tests.

About National Institute of Technology, Calicut

NIT Calicut is a publicly funded, residential institute of national importance in Kerala, with roughly 6,500 students and a broad technical research mission. Its Office of Research and Consultancy coordinates sponsored research, industrial consultancy, patent support, and access to campus laboratories. The Centre for Industry–Institutional Relations channels joint research, industrial projects, expert engagement, training, and industry-sponsored R&D facilities. A Technology Business Incubator supports workspace, mentoring, networking, and startup formation. Research is supported by Indian agencies including DST/ANRF, CSIR, DRDO, ISRO, DBT, MeitY, and the Ministry of Education; a patent cell and NRDC partnership strengthen commercialization.
