Company

A bio-based UV protection system using plant-derived polyphenols and nanocellulose to protect agrochemicals from UV degradation. The technology combines UV absorption, radical scavenging, and sustained delivery to improve stability and efficacy. Designed to be non-persistent, biodegradable, and safer than traditional UV stabilizers, with tunable performance via selection of plant compound classes and nanocellulose interfacial behavior.

Overview

The proposed solution is a hybrid, bio-based UV protection system that integrates plant-derived polyphenols with a phenolic-rich nanocellulose matrix. This approach aims to protect agrochemicals from UV degradation. The system leverages three synergistic mechanisms: UV absorption, radical scavenging, and sustained delivery. The bioactive plant compounds are designed to absorb UV light in the 280–420 nm range, while the nanocellulose matrix acts as a stabilizer, enhancing the dispersion and adhesion of the actives on plant surfaces. This solution addresses both performance and regulatory gaps, offering a non-persistent, biodegradable, and safe alternative to traditional UV stabilizers.

Technical specifications
  • UV Absorption: Plant-derived polyphenols absorb UVB and UVA, incorporated within a phenolic-rich nanocellulose matrix.
  • Radical Scavenging: Provides antioxidant activity to prevent UV-induced degradation.
  • Sustained Delivery: Nanocellulose acts as a biodegradable carrier, improving dispersion, adhesion, and stability.
  • Tunable System: Plant cell lines can be optimized for specific compound classes with higher UV absorption potential. Nanocellulose offers tunable interfacial activity based on environmental conditions.
  • Safe and Scalable: Produced from renewable sources, safe for plants, the environment, and humans.
Technology readiness level

The technology is currently at TRL 4, with ongoing validation and co-development efforts. Future validation steps include co-design and sample evaluation, joint formulation development, and validation with scale-up preparation. Pilot-scale production is planned following successful validation.

About Callus Cultures Corporation dba Cyanotype Bio

Cyanotype Bio is a biotechnology company focused on biodiversity and sustainable ingredient production using proprietary plant cell agriculture technology.
