A plasma-based seed treatment technology that uses dielectric barrier discharge to enhance germination, growth, and disease-free viability in crops. Validated on wheat, black gram, and rapeseed, with upcoming trials on tomato and spinach to optimize treatment parameters and mechanistic understanding for agricultural applications.
This solution leverages plasma technology to address critical challenges in crop production, including climate change, environmental hazards, and shrinking agricultural land. By treating seeds with carefully controlled plasma, the technology delivers specific reactive species, densities, and temperatures to stimulate biological processes that enhance seed viability, germination, growth, and pathogen elimination. The approach offers a promising alternative to traditional methods for ensuring higher crop yields and disease-free seeds, supporting growers and farmers in meeting food and horticultural demand.
The technology has demonstrated proof-of-concept through successful validation on wheat, black gram, and rapeseed seeds using low-pressure dielectric barrier discharge plasma. Future work will expand testing to tomato and spinach seeds, incorporating systematic optimization of plasma parameters and comprehensive mechanistic characterization. Both controlled environment (growth chamber) and field trials are planned to validate the technology under real-world agricultural conditions before broader deployment.
RUET is a mid-sized public engineering and technology university in Rajshahi, Bangladesh, with about 6,150 students, 430 faculty members, and 18 departments. Its research environment combines postgraduate study, modern laboratories, and a dedicated Research and Extension function that supports competitive projects and researcher development. Industry engagement operates through formal collaboration agreements, industry-academia meetings, professional training partnerships, and an Innovation Hub connecting researchers with entrepreneurs and external stakeholders. Funding comes primarily from Bangladesh’s University Grants Commission, the Ministry of Education, RUET’s internal research grants, and other national government programs, with additional international support.
