Portable Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) enables real-time detection of mycotoxins in corn using fiber-optic probes. The non-destructive, at-line/on-site approach supports rapid, cost-effective screening of corn kernels and powders by converting spectral fingerprints into quantitative predictions and alerts via multivariate chemometric models. Optimized signal acquisition with multiple positions and technical replicates improves reliability for use by non-specialists in quality control workflows.

Overview

A portable Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) solution has been developed for real-time screening of mycotoxins in corn. The technology uses fiber-optic probes to analyze corn kernels and powders on-site, providing rapid and low-cost detection. It is intended to support scalable management of mycotoxin risk thresholds within corn quality control and processing workflows. The approach is designed for ease of use so non-specialists can perform screenings efficiently and support decision-making in processing environments.

Technical specifications
  • Non-destructive analysis: Uses NIRS to avoid altering the sample, preserving sample integrity for further testing.
  • Chemometric modeling: Transforms spectral fingerprints into quantitative predictions and alerts using multivariate models.
  • Real-time, on-site operation: Portable device supports at-line or on-site measurements for immediate results.
  • Compatibility: Works with heterogeneous solid matrices, including corn kernels and flour.
  • Optimized signal acquisition: Employs multiple sample positions and technical replicates to improve data reliability.
Technology readiness level

The technology has achieved a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 6, indicating validation under relevant conditions. A comprehensive testing and validation program is planned over a 36-month period, including external validation and final recommendations for deployment.

About Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique

INRS is a graduate-only public research university within the Université du Québec network, operating interdisciplinary research and training centers in Montréal, Québec City, Laval, Varennes, and Charlevoix. For corporate partners, co-located campuses and shared core facilities streamline access to advanced instrumentation and specialized platforms. Geography strengthens collaboration: sites span the Montréal–Québec innovation corridor, with the Laval campus anchoring Biotech City and strong linkages to municipal and provincial partners. Research is supported by competitive federal and provincial programs, including CFI and Canada’s tri‑council agencies alongside Québec’s Fonds de recherche. A dedicated partnerships and innovation service supports contracts, IP, and commercialization to simplify engagement for companies.
