A cutting-edge terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz TDS) system for non-destructive inspection of weld quality in TPO roofing membranes, aimed at developing a portable, real-time solution for defect detection and quality control.
This innovative solution leverages terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz TDS) to provide non-destructive inspection of weld quality in thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) roofing membranes. Utilizing a laboratory-based THz system, the technology is designed to detect defects such as poor fusion, voids, and temperature inconsistencies in welds, thereby enhancing quality control and safety standards in roofing applications. The project aims to transition this laboratory capability into a field-deployable solution, equipped with user-friendly software for real-time data visualization and reporting.
The current technology readiness level is 2, indicating that the basic principles have been observed and reported. Ongoing research and development are focused on validating the system's capabilities and preparing for the development of a prototype suitable for field deployment.
The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is Australia’s national science agency—an applied research organization with a nationwide network of sites and facilities from lab to demonstration scale. Industry partners engage through co‑located labs, pilot plants, test ranges, and marine platforms that enable at‑scale prototyping, field trials, and independent validation, backed by streamlined contracting and dedicated engagement teams. Research is supported by Australian Government appropriations and competitive national grants (e.g., Australian Research Council and National Health and Medical Research Council), alongside industry contracts. A centralized commercialization office manages IP, licensing, and spinout formation, with standard agreements that shorten time to partnership.
