A novel Terahertz (THz) imaging system utilizing polarization-sensitive cameras to non-destructively evaluate the integrity of TPO membrane welds. This approach detects internal strain and fusion quality, offering an advanced alternative to conventional inspection methods.
The proposed Terahertz (THz) polarimetric imaging system provides a groundbreaking method for nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of weld integrity in thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) membranes. By using polarization-sensitive THz cameras, this system can detect stress-induced birefringence, a key indicator of improper fusion or thermal mismatch during welding. This technology addresses the limitations of traditional inspection methods like visual checks or thermography, offering a comprehensive view of the weld quality through full-depth probing.
Key features:
The system builds on existing T-ray Time Domain Spectroscopy technology to measure stress-induced birefringence, demonstrating reliable defect detection. A laboratory prototype will be developed to simulate field conditions, using a reflection mode configuration with a polarization-sensitive THz camera.
The technology is currently at TRL 4, having been validated in laboratory settings with representative TPO membrane weld samples. The next steps involve developing a field-ready prototype and conducting tests to ensure performance under practical constraints. This initiative benefits from previous successful applications in similar NDE projects, enhancing its reliability and applicability for future deployment.
NJIT is a public polytechnic research university (Carnegie R1) in Newark, serving the New York–New Jersey innovation corridor. Industry engages on campus through VentureLink, the university’s startup incubator in University Heights Science Park and the Newark Innovation Zone, and via a large makerspace that supports prototyping for external partners. The New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII), a corporation of NJIT, provides an industry‑facing gateway, including a venture‑studio model launched with the state’s economic‑development authority, to speed translation and scale. Research is backed by competitive federal funding from agencies such as NSF, NIH, DOE and DoD. An Intellectual Property and Technology Licensing Office manages IP, licensing and startup formation alongside NJII and VentureLink.
