Advancements in Pioneer corn hybrids are linked to improved rhizosphere microbiome recruitment, enhancing nutrient uptake and disease resistance. This study characterizes microbial communities to optimize hybrid performance.

Overview

This research focuses on understanding how Pioneer-brand corn hybrids influence the recruitment of soil microorganisms into the rhizosphere, enhancing both nutrient uptake and resistance to diseases. By altering the composition and functional capabilities of rhizosphere microbiomes, these hybrids could achieve superior performance under various agricultural conditions. The study aims to delineate the microbial community profiles associated with different corn genotypes and identify their roles in plant growth and health.

Technical specifications
  • Microbiome recruitment: The project's primary goal is to characterize how different corn hybrids recruit soil microorganisms, affecting nutrient provisioning and disease resistance.
  • Methodology: Propagation of ERA hybrid rhizospheres using soil samples that replicate previous field trial conditions. Sequencing data will analyze over 650 genes to understand microbial community composition.
  • Metrics analyzed: Reports will detail metrics such as species diversity, community evenness, mycorrhizal abundance, functional gene assessments, and resilience to environmental stresses like drought.
Technology readiness level

This research is at Technology Readiness Level 6, indicating that the technology has been demonstrated in relevant environments and is moving towards further validation and optimization for commercial application.
