EcoYield Solutions AB introduces a patented method using calcium silicate to deliver silica to rice plants, enhancing pest resistance and sustainability. This efficient solution offers an alternative to traditional liquid fertilizers, reducing costs and strengthening plant defenses.
EcoYield Solutions AB has developed a patented method to enhance rice plant resilience using calcium silicate as a stable source of bioavailable silica. This innovative approach is designed to fortify rice against pests such as the brown planthopper, a significant challenge in rice cultivation. By eliminating the need for liquid fertilizer transport, this solution reduces costs and promotes sustainable agriculture.
Calcium silicate offers a concentrated form of silica that can be applied through soil amendments, seed treatments, or dissolved on-site for spraying. Silica boosts rice plant defenses by depositing as phytoliths, which toughen leaves and sheaths, making it difficult for pests to feed. Additionally, silica activates key enzymes like peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, enhancing systemic resistance. This method has demonstrated efficacy in reducing pest survival, feeding, and reproduction, while also improving the plant's biochemical defenses.
Currently at Technology Readiness Level 4, this method has been validated in lab-scale greenhouse experiments. Further testing is planned to optimize dosage and delivery methods through full-scale field trials, aiming to validate lab findings under real-world conditions and facilitate commercial adoption.
