Understanding plant cuticle impact on fungicide penetration and efficiency

Technology
Conceptual
University

This research aims to optimize fungicide effectiveness by studying the plant cuticle's role in fungicide penetration. By analyzing the cuticle's chemical and structural components, the study will enhance fungicide efficacy across different plant species and growth stages.

Overview

This research focuses on understanding how the composition and structure of plant cuticles affect the penetration and effectiveness of fungicides. By examining the interactions between fungicides and plant cuticles, particularly the role of long-chain fatty acids and other biochemical components, the research aims to enhance fungicide efficacy across various crops. Understanding these interactions will support the development of more effective fungicide applications tailored to specific plant characteristics.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Analysis of cuticle composition including waxes, cutin, and long-chain fatty acids using GC-MS.
  • Investigation of fungicide penetration across different plant species (wheat and soybean) and growth stages.
  • Characterization of fungicide localization in four plant leaf compartments: leaf surface, wax and cutin layer, and cellular tissue.
  • Examination of cuticle thickness and wax ultrastructure using transmission and scanning electronic microscopy.
  • Establishment of correlations between cuticle composition and fungicide penetration patterns to enhance AI efficacy.
Technology readiness level

Currently, this research is at Technology Readiness Level 3. The study includes biochemical and imaging analyses to validate findings and establish correlations between cuticle characteristics and fungicide behavior, with ongoing efforts to advance the technology further.
