Research collaboration to validate plant-derived antifungal compounds effective against Fusarium fungi, which cause significant yield losses in faba bean crops. Building on prior in vitro screening with Ethiopian plant extracts, this project aims to isolate, characterize, and evaluate bioactive compounds through greenhouse trials to develop a marketable crop protection product.

Overview

This research initiative focuses on validating the antifungal activity of plant-derived metabolites against Fusarium soil fungi, a major pathogen responsible for faba bean root wilt in Ethiopia. Faba bean is a critical staple food crop in the region, and Fusarium-related diseases can reduce productivity by up to 50%. Previous in vitro screening conducted in collaboration with the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) identified active plant extracts and compounds with promising antifungal properties. The goal of this project is to move beyond laboratory validation toward developing a practical, marketable crop protection product that can help safeguard food security for smallholder farmers.

Technical specifications

Research approach:

  • Bioactive compounds will be re-isolated using chromatographic separation methods
  • Isolated compounds will be characterized through spectroscopic analytical techniques
  • Compounds will be bioassayed under the same conditions used in previous screening for consistency and validation
  • Selected plant extracts (at least two) and their bioactive compounds will be evaluated in vivo through greenhouse trials
  • Chemical isolation and characterization procedures will follow established protocols from prior research

Target application:

  • Development of natural antifungal agents for managing Fusarium root wilt in faba bean and potentially other crops
  • Potential pathway from validated compound to formulated crop protection product
Technology readiness level

The research is currently at an early-to-mid stage of development. Prior in vitro screening has successfully identified active extracts and compounds, providing a foundation for further validation. The next critical steps involve greenhouse (in vivo) evaluation to confirm efficacy under more realistic growing conditions. The project explicitly seeks cooperation among funding and research organizations to advance the work toward a commercially viable product. Successful completion of greenhouse trials would represent a significant step toward field validation and eventual product development.
