Natural-source β-diketone compounds that form ultra-water-repellent coatings on plant aerial surfaces, offering protection against fungal pathogens, herbivores, frost, and water loss. Suitable for agriculture, horticulture, and crop protection applications.

Overview

Very-long-chain β-diketones are naturally derived compounds that can be extracted and purified from plant sources. When applied to aerial plant surfaces, these compounds generate superhydrophobic coatings that repel water and create a protective barrier. The technology addresses multiple stress factors simultaneously, including biotic threats such as fungal pathogens and herbivores, as well as abiotic stresses like frost damage and dehydration.

The coating approach offers a sustainable alternative or complement to conventional pesticides and protective treatments. By leveraging the natural chemical properties of β-diketones, the solution provides broad-spectrum plant protection through a single, naturally sourced treatment.

Technical specifications

Mechanism of action:

  • Forms ultra-water-repellent (superhydrophobic) coatings on leaves, stems, and other aerial plant parts
  • Inhibits fungal spore accumulation on plant surfaces by preventing moisture retention
  • Reduces ice formation and penetration under frost conditions
  • Creates a thick cuticle layer that physically inhibits herbivore feeding

Key features:

  • Compounds are extracted and purified from natural botanical sources
  • Multi-stress protection from a single coating application
  • Compatible with organic and conventional production systems
  • Based on naturally occurring plant biochemistry
Technology readiness level

The research is currently at the hypothesis-validation stage. The scientific basis has been established through understanding of β-diketone chemistry and cuticle biology. Further validation procedures and future testing plans are needed to confirm field efficacy, optimize extraction and purification methods, and evaluate performance across different crop species and environmental conditions before commercial deployment.
