About sleep technology

Half of the work on Halo is screening, not sleeping. Ten entries offer a way to test whether a botanical or a compound affects circadian rhythm, seven of them using Drosophila. The devices act through the night and measure what they did, and the formulations lead on what happens the next morning. On Halo it spans three groups: screening a sleep bioactive, acting during the night, and formulations taken before bed.

Stage of development. Work on sleep technology on Halo comes mostly from university programs. 54% of the solutions are in market. Co-development and sponsored research are the usual partnering routes, and about 41% of the solutions that state terms offer pilot engagements.

Three trends in sleep technology on Halo

Seven Drosophila platforms. Imperial, Nottingham, Auckland, Washington University, Loma Linda, Mahidol and a mosquito variant from Notre Dame all offer screening of sleep and circadian bioactives in insects, most of them explicitly as a non-animal alternative. Three more use microfluidics, neuronal reporters or in vitro models. One request for a screening route has been answered ten times.

The device has to close the loop. Five entries act during the night and check the result: a wearable that intervenes and then measures, auditory stimulation that adapts as the night goes on, autonomic regulation aimed at waking clear-headed, and multi-sensory mapping paired with stimulation. Tracking sleep is a solved and commoditized problem; changing it is not.

The claim has moved to the morning. Three of four formulations lead on what happens after waking, not on falling asleep: no grogginess, next-morning clarity, non-sedative. Sedatives work and people dislike what they cost the following day, so the competitive ground has shifted from onset to the hours that follow.

Frequently asked questions

What is sleep technology?

Sleep technology covers helping someone sleep and proving that something did. It spans non-animal screening platforms for circadian and sleep bioactives, closed-loop devices that act during the night and measure the result, and the formulations taken before bed. Consumer health brands, supplement companies and device makers are the buyers. On Halo the work leans toward screening a sleep bioactive, acting during the night, and formulations taken before bed.

What are examples of sleep technology?

Three examples of sleep technology solutions on Halo include:

  • High-throughput circadian screening on Drosophila, automated end to end. (Imperial College London)
  • A wearable that acts during sleep, then measures whether it helped. (Vanderbilt University)
  • Eight clinically studied ingredients across five sleep pathways, and no grogginess. (Healthy Ingredient Solutions, LLC)

What are the latest sleep technology innovations?

Over the past 90 days, researchers and innovators on Halo have added these sleep technology solutions:

  • The same screening sold as a service, per compound. (University of Nottingham)
  • A wearable that acts during sleep, then measures whether it helped. (Vanderbilt University)
  • A non-sedative approach argued on next-morning clarity. (phantom solutions inc)

Which companies and suppliers are developing sleep technology?
