Consumer at-home diagnostics expertsTwo requests account for most of the work on Halo. Fourteen entries detect a micronutrient deficiency or genotype a SNP outside a lab, using LAMP, lateral flow, electrochemistry or ligation assays. Six more put plaque detection into a toothbrush, a pen or a phone camera. On Halo it spans 7 groups, including micronutrient testing at home, SNP genotyping outside a lab, and oral health sensing.
Stage of development. Work on consumer at-home diagnostics on Halo is split between university programs and companies. 33% of the solutions are in market. Co-development and sponsored research are the usual partnering routes, and about 36% of the solutions that state terms offer pilot engagements.
Micronutrients and SNPs, fourteen ways. Eight entries measure a micronutrient and six genotype the SNPs that govern how a person handles one. They span LAMP in several forms, multiplexed lateral flow, electrochemistry, allele-specific PCR, CRISPR, an oligonucleotide ligation assay and enzyme-free DNA nanoswitches. One request has clearly gone out and been answered from every direction in molecular diagnostics.
The mouth is the accessible organ. Six entries detect dental plaque and each picks a different everyday object to hide in: a sonic toothbrush that senses while it brushes, a smartphone accessory, a pen using photothermal and luminescence signals, UV and blue LEDs in a retail display, and two pH imaging approaches. Saliva is free, the tissue is visible, and nobody has to be persuaded to open their mouth.
Sample preparation is the quiet half. Three entries never detect anything. A saliva device that stabilizes cell-free nucleic acid at the point of collection, super-absorbent polymer beads that enrich and purify by themselves, and a plasma separator so a finger-prick can be tested at all. Assays get cheaper and smaller; getting a usable sample out of a person at home does not.
Consumer at-home diagnostics covers running a test outside a laboratory and trusting the answer. It spans micronutrient testing from blood or saliva, SNP genotyping decentralized to a kitchen table, oral health sensing built into a toothbrush or a phone, molecular detection platforms adapted to consumer settings, sample collection and preparation, and hormone tracking. Consumer health brands, diagnostics companies and retailers are the buyers.
