Background

We are a US-based Fortune 100 company, serving customers around the globe, and committed to sustainability, particularly in heavy-duty sectors such as construction, mining, and transportation. Recognizing that these industries have significantly higher energy demands than conventional vehicles, we have embraced electrification, alternative fuels, and integrated digital solutions to drive efficiency and reduce environmental impact in energy-intensive operations.

One area of innovation is in the electrification of heavy-duty equipment, particularly through advancements in energy storage and transfer. Heavy-duty vehicles like trucks, construction machinery, locomotives, and mining equipment require large amounts of power for extended periods. However, current battery technology struggles with balancing energy density (how much energy the battery can store), power output, and the physical size and weight of the batteries.

By advancing energy storage and transfer technologies, heavy-duty electric vehicles could pave the way for more sustainable, efficient operations across industries, even in the toughest environments.

What we're looking for

We are looking for mobile, compact, high-power electric storage systems and wireless fast-charging technology to enhance efficiency and reduce downtime in operations with heavy-duty electric vehicles. We seek groundbreaking technologies that improve battery energy density, power output, thermal management, durability, and wireless charging speed, while maintaining or enhancing payload capacity.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Solid-state batteries with improved energy density and safety
  • Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries offering higher energy density and addressing degradation challenges
  • Metal-air batteries for lightweight, high-density energy storage
  • Compact vanadium redox flow batteries for mobile applications
  • Advanced thermal management in high-power battery systems
  • Hybrid capacitors for fast energy delivery and longer power storage
  • Quantum dot wireless energy transfer for high efficiency wireless charging
  • Wireless power transfer using magnetoelectric materials
  • Resonant inductive coupling for efficient wireless charging
  • Dynamic charging systems allowing charging while in motion
  • Other emerging wireless charging technologies for industrial machinery
Our must-have requirements are:
  • Improvements in either battery energy density, power output or thermal management
  • Reduces downtime through faster charging or energy transfer
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Compact designs that minimize weight and maximize payload capacity
  • Wireless charging solutions that can efficiently charge vehicles from a greater distance or with less precise alignment
  • Technologies that enhance battery lifespan or overall durability of energy systems
What's out of scope:
  • Conventional lithium-ion battery technology
  • Existing inductive wireless charging systems
  • Solutions that lack a clear path to scalability for heavy-duty applications
  • Technologies that pose significant environmental or health hazards during operation or disposal
Acceptable technology readiness levels (TRL):
Levels 1-9

Q.
Would you consider energy conversion technologies, such as fuel cells that utilize liquid fuels (instead of hydrogen)? There is no charging time, and refueling is as quick as refilling gas or diesel tanks. Thanks!
1
A.
Hello Xianglin Li, Thank you for your question! Yes, we are open to receiving proposals about other energy conversion technologies such as fuel cells. They need to have reduced carbon footprint versus comparable technologies, their efficiency should be up to industry standards or higher, and their cost competitiveness should not be prohibitive of commercialization in the future.

Q.
Good day, What is the lead time for this project and how will the scope of the project be allocated because thermal management of the solution requires its own proposal?
1
A.
Hi Mpho, Thank you for the question! The lead time will depend on the proposed project. Please submit your proposal - we are happy to discuss details from there on a case-by-case basis, including how the project will be allocated.
