Background

Pectin production involves extracting soluble pectin from citrus peels and apple pomace, leaving behind significant quantities of residual material. After extraction and primary separation, a wet, fibrous biomass remains, alongside smaller quantities of fine residues generated during clarification steps. These side streams, typically called spent peels or used citrus peels, can contain structural polysaccharides, residual pectin, sugars, organic acids, and minerals. 

 

Currently, these materials are typically managed through low-value routes such as neutralization and disposal or energy recovery, which can incur costs and underutilize their potential. Their high moisture content, variable composition, and exposure to process conditions can limit reuse options, while regulatory constraints may restrict applications in areas such as food. However this should not limit the use and application of the spent peels. Where necessary, the regulatory aspect needs to be looked at. 

 

New approaches that enable the extraction, fractionation, or transformation of these side streams into functional materials or industrial inputs could unlock the value embedded in them and enable their integration into higher-value applications. This would reduce reliance on disposal routes and support more sustainable and circular production practices.

What we're looking for

We are looking for approaches to valorize side streams generated during pectin production, through extraction, separation, transformation, or reuse in other applications, with a focus on fibrous residues from extraction. Approaches addressing additional streams, such as filtration residues or spent filtration aids, are also of interest.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Physical, chemical, or biological transformation routes
  • Extraction of residual pectin or valuable polysaccharides
  • Fractionation of fibrous residues into functional components
  • Conversion into non-food industrial fiber products
  • Use as feedstock for bio-based materials or composites
  • Fermentation into organic acids, enzymes, or biochemicals
  • Anaerobic digestion with improved biogas yield
  • Production of biochar, adsorbents, or soil amendments
  • Recovery of sugars, acids, or minerals
  • Circular reuse in paper, packaging, or textile applications
  • Dewatering or conditioning to enable higher-value reuse

  • Demonstrates a clear pathway to industrial scalability or implementation
  • Provides a rationale for how value can be generated from the side streams

Our patented process valorizes raw citrus peel right after juicing into pectin, d-limonene, flavonoids, and sustainable cellulose for textiles in a low energy and acid-free process. Does this solution fit your mandate?

We use raw citrus dry peel to extract the citrus pectin, and after solubilize the pectin the "extracted citrus peel" is considered as side stream that it has low content of terpenes, in the range 40-80 ppm in dry basis, but it is interesting to know your proposal for sustainable cellulose for textiles

Would you consider a new integrated valorization process if its principal unit operations are already demonstrated at TRL 5+, but their specific combination for extracted citrus peel has not yet been validated together?

Together with our commercial partner our process is the torrefaction of the peel into biochar. Is this of interest ?

Yes, this is of interest as well. we have experience where the peels are being mixed with biomass and burned to produce steam. If moving into the direction of biochar can generate value, we are open to it.

Q.
Cellulose and hemicelluous is widely used in construction materials, such as concrete. Considering the gigaton level of cement use every year, are you interested in applying this byproduct in cement industry?

Yes, we are open to all the possibilities and evaluate them. Limitation from our side would be the further processing or re-reprocessing this stream to make it fit for purpose. This needs to be done externally.

We have tools to predict the molecular content of an extract and to predict the biological activities of the molecules, we can apply this to develop an active ingredient for cosmetics. Would this be interesting for you ?

After extraction, is the wet spent peel already neutralized before it is mixed for steam? If so, to what pH and with what alkali? We would use that step for a biological soil amendment, not add plant operations.

Hi Frederico, mineral acid like HNO3 is used and is just this compound remain in the wet spent citrus peel / apple pomace that could be quantified by NO3 content.

Based on the information shared, the material appears to have a viable regulatory pathway for use as a BSFL feedstock, subject to confirming nitrate levels and feed/by-product status. Bioconversion as feedsctock was not listed among the main valorisation options, would Cargill still be open to evaluating this pathway?

Depending on if the extraction process is benign, this material dried could be used as part of a skin exfoliation formulation.

Thanks for the response. Depends on the buffering capacity of the extract. I would be interested to look at skin exfoliation and potentially as anti-caking additive in fertilizers and feed (processed externally). However, considering these will be exploratory assessments, I am not sure if it fits the call scope.

Does the "spent peel" biomass retain citrus peel oil/essential oil (valencene and other terpenes)?

A.
Total terpenes content is rather low, in range of 40 - 80 mg/kg in dry basis and the main component is d-limonene around 85% followed by alpha terpineol.
