Background

Oral health plays a critical role in overall well-being, with daily care routines serving as the primary defense against a range of conditions affecting the oral cavity. Despite widespread use of oral care products, many individuals continue to experience issues such as plaque accumulation, gum irritation, and progressive gum recession. These challenges are often exacerbated by inconsistent routines, suboptimal product performance, and insufficient delivery and retention of active ingredients at the site of action.

Soft tissues in the oral cavity, including the gingiva and mucosal surfaces, are particularly vulnerable to mechanical, chemical, and microbial stressors, leading to damage and inflammation. Existing solutions may not fully address the need to protect these tissues, promote healing, or restore their structure and function. As a result, their effectiveness in preventing or managing early-stage conditions and maintaining tissue health can be limited.

Novel products, ingredients, and technologies that repair, regenerate, or enhance gum tissue are needed to advance oral soft tissue health. This includes new ingredients with therapeutic or protective benefits and delivery systems that improve deposition, retention, and sustained release of actives. Solutions that provide longer-lasting protection, reduce oral health risks, and improve existing conditions could enhance the efficacy of oral care products and the overall user experience.

What we're looking for

We are looking for innovative products, ingredients, and technologies that improve the health, function, and appearance of oral soft tissues, particularly the gums. This includes novel actives and solutions that support the prevention and treatment of gingivitis and related conditions, provide protection against microbial, chemical, and mechanical challenges, reduce the risk of oral health issues, and improve existing conditions. Desired outcomes include the repair, regeneration, or enhancement of oral soft tissues, including reversing gum recession, promoting healing, and increasing tissue resilience.

We are also open to solutions that enhance the performance and user experience of oral care products through improved deposition, retention, and sustained release of flavors and sensates. Approaches that enable long-lasting effects, continuous treatment, and extended protection on oral surfaces are of particular interest.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Actives for prevention, treatment, and rapid relief of gingivitis and gum symptoms (bleeding, inflammation, pain, tenderness)
  • Actives enabling gum repair, regeneration, improved tissue resilience, and reversal of gum recession
  • Actives for protection against supra-/sub-gingival plaque, gingivitis-related biofilms, and hypersensitivity
  • Technologies enabling sub-gingival delivery of oral care actives
  • Toothpaste formulations
  • Mouth rinse formulations
  • Leave-on formats (gels, serums, films)
  • Alternative or combination delivery formats
  • Individual ingredients or materials requiring formulation
  • Fully formulated oral care products
  • Delivery systems enhancing retention, contact across oral soft tissues, and bioavailability of actives such as stannous fluoride and cetylpyridinium chloride
Our must-have requirements are:
  • Evidence supporting efficacy (e.g., in vitro, ex vivo, or clinical data)
  • Demonstrated impact on gum health or improved delivery (deposition, retention & release) leading to oral health benefits
  • Demonstrated safety for human use or material(s) are food-grade or GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe)
  • Regulatory approval or clear pathway supporting oral care use (e.g., FDA approval, US OTC monograph compliance, or equivalent in other markets)
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Long-lasting retention of actives, flavors, or sensates on oral soft tissues (e.g., 4+ hours)
  • Delivery technologies providing enhanced mouthfeel (e.g., lubricity, smoothness)
  • Demonstrated overnight efficacy or benefits supporting improved “morning mouth”
  • Flexible usage formats (e.g., pre/post brushing, on-demand, booster applications)
  • Demonstrated substantivity (remains active in the oral cavity) with prolonged activity against plaque and tartar build up or gingivitis
  • Sustained antimicrobial activity against pathogens linked to gingivitis or periodontitis
  • Demonstrated performance (e.g., salivary pK changes, surface uptake) supported by data versus appropriate controls and standard technologies
  • Performance, stability, and compatibility demonstrated in aqueous oral care formulations
  • Clinical evidence showing meaningful reductions in plaque and gingivitis
  • Granted or filed patent applications supporting the innovation
What's out of scope:
  • Prescription-only (Rx) solutions
  • Solutions providing only short-term or transient benefits
  • Technologies requiring extensive clinical development
Acceptable technology readiness levels (TRL):
Levels 4-9
