Background

The current landscape of personal care aerosols, such as anti-perspirant/deodorant and sun care products, highlights the popularity and functionality of continuous spray solutions. These formats offer consistent, even coverage without requiring users to touch the product during application. This non-contact delivery enhances user experience and facilitates a light and breathable coat on the surface, making them appealing for personal care routines.

Traditional spray solutions face several challenges that need innovation. Many aerosol products are perceived as gassy and loud during application, leading to an unpleasant user experience. Additionally, there is increasing consumer concern regarding the environmental impact of aerosol propellants, as well as the perception that these products contain harmful chemicals. Furthermore, issues such as uneven spray distribution and a cold sensation upon application can detract from the overall effectiveness and comfort of these products.

In light of these challenges, our organization seeks to explore new and innovative spray solutions that can address these issues while retaining the desirable benefits of continuous application. We invite external partners to share ideas, concepts, product samples, or technologies that can enhance the formulation and delivery of personal care products. Our goal is to develop advanced spray mechanisms that improve user experience, environmental sustainability, and overall product efficacy.

What we're looking for

We are looking for innovative spray delivery technologies for personal care formulations, including chemical, energized, and mechanical spray systems. We are interested in solutions that can support liquid and/or powder formulations.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Dispensing tech for high-viscosity liquids
  • Systems for liquids with suspended or dispersed powders
  • Atomized spray technologies for fine, uniform coverage
  • Continuous spray systems that operate without propellants
  • Novel valve mechanisms beyond typical spring-loaded stem/gasket aerosol valves
  • New propellants beyond typical fluorocarbons, butane, propane, isobutane, nitrogen, CO2, etc.
  • New container formats for pressurized products beyond typical aluminum or tinplate aerosol cans
Our must-have requirements are:
  • Ability to spray 0.4-0.7g of composition in 2-4 seconds
  • Achieves spray distribution with DV50 (median) particle size of 70 microns
What's out of scope:
  • Commercially available/commonly used valves, actuators, etc.
  • Non-continuous sprays, such as finger pumps or trigger sprayers
Acceptable technology readiness levels (TRL):
Levels 3-9

Q.
Would P&G consider energy-assisted, propellant-free spray systems (e.g., acoustic or electrostatic)? Are there constraints on power source, size, or recyclability for consumer use?
1
A.
Hi Bircan- Thank you for reaching out. I would say that it is unlikely that we would commercialize an energy-assisted solution. However, if you think you have a novel solution I would be happy to review. -Chris

Q.
Hello, 1) What is the targeted deposition site(s) for these products? What is the packaged shelf life expectation? Would unit dose (i.e. unit of use) packaging of the product be a consideration?
1
A.
Hi Timothy. Thank you for the questions. The targeted deposition site is the body, with the primary application site being the underarm, but also including chest, back, legs and feet. The product will not be designed to spray onto the face. Target product deposition density is approximately 1g per 75cm^2 of area. Target shelf life is 2 years frmo date of manufacture. A unit dose application could be considered. In that case, a target spray per dose would probably need to be in the 0.5g range. -Chris
