Ag Energy Solutions offers a patented carbon-negative Biomass Processing Platform (BPU) that converts agricultural waste into renewable energy and biochar. The technology delivers proven crop yield increases of 40-75% in lettuce and 57% in organic tomatoes, while sequestering carbon and improving soil health.

Overview

Ag Energy Solutions has developed a patented Biomass Processing Platform (BPU) that converts agricultural residue and waste into two valuable outputs: renewable energy and crop-residue-based biochar. This carbon-negative technology addresses agricultural waste challenges while simultaneously producing energy, improving crop yields, sequestering atmospheric carbon, and enhancing soil health.

The platform offers a practical solution for farms, agricultural operations, and sustainability-focused organizations seeking to reduce waste, generate on-site renewable energy, and improve soil performance. By processing excess biomass such as corn stover and crop residues, the BPU creates a closed-loop system that benefits both the environment and agricultural productivity.

Technical specifications

Platform capabilities:

  • Processes multiple types of agricultural biomass into renewable energy and biochar
  • Annual output capacity of 450 tons of biomass processed per unit
  • Generates approximately 660,000 KWh of renewable energy per unit annually
  • Sequesters approximately 574 tons of CO₂ per unit annually through biochar production
  • Produces unique biochar formulations proven to enhance soil microbial activity and plant health

Demonstrated crop performance improvements:

  • 57% yield increase in organic tomatoes using crop residue-based biochar
  • 40-75% yield increases across three varieties of lettuce using crop residue-based biochar
  • Improvements in soil microbial enhancements and overall plant health

Proposed deployment model:

  • Four-year trial program with two sites
  • Three biomass processing units at each location
  • Proximity to large corn-producing environments
  • Integration with warehouse or greenhouse facilities capable of utilizing the renewable energy output
  • Application and study of biochar on corn fields for carbon sequestration
Technology readiness level

The Biomass Processing Platform has been developed and validated over more than 10 years of operation by Ag Energy Solutions. The technology has demonstrated consistent annual outputs in renewable energy production and carbon offset, with multiple biochar studies confirming significant yield improvements in commercial crops including tomatoes and lettuce.

A future validation effort is planned to study the platform's application in corn farming, focusing on processing excess corn stover, producing renewable energy, increasing crop yields and revenues, and sequestering carbon through biochar application. This upcoming sustainability study represents the next phase of commercialization and broader agricultural deployment.
