Company

Defined Bioscience is developing an animal-free fermentation platform for precision collagen-supporting peptides. The process combines designed recombinant collagen-like precursors, engineered proline hydroxylation, controlled enzymatic hydrolysis, and fractionation to produce standardized low-molecular-weight peptide ingredients—including Pro-Hyp, Hyp-Gly, and Gly-Pro-Hyp—for oral skin and collagen health applications. This scalable, consistent alternative to animal-derived collagen hydrolysates is currently in early-stage R&D.

Overview

Defined Bioscience is developing an animal-free platform for producing precision collagen-supporting peptide ingredients. The platform is designed to create standardized, low-molecular-weight peptides through microbial fermentation rather than animal extraction. Target peptides include hydroxyproline-containing sequences such as Pro-Hyp, Hyp-Gly, and Gly-Pro-Hyp, which are associated with collagen-supporting benefits. The resulting ingredients are intended for use in oral nutritional products aimed at skin health, dermal collagen support, and other collagen-related applications.

Human oral studies support the relevance of this peptide class: collagen hydrolysates enriched in Pro-Hyp and Hyp-Gly have been linked to improved skin moisture, elasticity, wrinkles, and roughness, while Gly-Pro-Hyp is systemically absorbed after collagen ingestion and has shown extracellular-matrix-related activity in dermal fibroblasts. By using fermentation and controlled processing, the platform offers a consistent, scalable, animal-free alternative to conventional animal-derived collagen hydrolysates.

Target applications:

  • Dietary supplement and functional food ingredients for skin and collagen health
  • Ingredient systems requiring consistent, animal-free, low-molecular-weight collagen peptides
Technology readiness level

The platform is in the early-stage research and development phase. Current validation activities include defining the target peptide profile, designing and screening precursor constructs for expression and hydroxylation, optimizing protease and fractionation conditions, and testing simulated gastrointestinal stability and bioactivity in collagen/ECM cell assays.

Future development steps include producing replicate scaled batches, assessing preliminary cost of goods and product stability, selecting a lead ingredient for pilot-scale production, advancing regulatory planning, and conducting human validation studies. As a result, the technology is not yet commercially available, and further development is required before market entry.
