Auburn University presents a novel biological solution for nematode control using stress-tolerant rhizobacteria from extreme environments. Demonstrating over 90% nematode mortality, these bioactives offer an environmentally safe alternative to chemical nematicides, promoting plant growth.

Overview

Auburn University has developed a novel biological solution for controlling plant-parasitic nematodes using stress-tolerant rhizobacteria isolated from extreme coastal and desert environments. These innovative biological nematicides show over 90% mortality of root-knot nematode juveniles in vitro and greenhouse tests, comparable to chemical standards. Beyond effective nematode suppression, these bioactives also enhance plant growth, providing a dual benefit. This solution addresses the urgent need for safe, alternative nematode control strategies due to the environmental and health challenges of conventional chemical nematicides.

Technical specifications

The technology utilizes bioactive molecules derived from unique rhizobacterial isolates with strong stress tolerance and novel modes of action. Key technical features include:

  • High nematode mortality rates exceeding 90% in vitro
  • Proven efficacy in greenhouse trials with soil drench applications
  • Potential applications in soil, seed, or in-plant treatments
  • Ongoing genomic and metabolomic analyses to identify active genes or metabolites
  • Versatility in application methods, being evaluated for seed treatments and foliar sprays
Technology readiness level

The current development is at Technology Readiness Level 4, with successful laboratory and greenhouse validation. Future steps include further evaluations in seed and foliar applications to ensure comprehensive effectiveness across various methods. The project invites partnerships for sponsored research, co-development, and licensing to advance towards field-ready solutions.
