An innovative herbicide encapsulation technology using eco-friendly biopolymer formulations. This approach enhances herbicide effectiveness by ensuring controlled release, reducing environmental impact, and improving delivery efficiency, with applications in agriculture.

Overview

This innovative technology utilizes eco-friendly biopolymer formulations to encapsulate herbicide active ingredients. The encapsulation significantly enhances the effectiveness of herbicides by providing controlled release and reducing environmental impact. It minimizes degradation through photolysis, leaching, and volatilization while ensuring a more targeted application. This eco-friendly approach results in a cost-effective solution for agriculture and promises faster regulatory approval due to its favorable environmental profile.

Technical specifications
  • Encapsulation Technology: Utilizes biopolymers to encapsulate active ingredients, enhancing stability and delivery.
  • Minimized Environmental Impact: Reduces photolysis, leaching, and volatilization, ensuring a more targeted application.
  • Applications: Suitable for managing challenging weed species, with ongoing trials for imazethapyr in soybeans and imazapic in sugarcane.
  • Patents and Trials: Four patents filed for individual active ingredients and one for a herbicide mixture. Carryover tests on corn and rice have shown a 50–70% reduction in phytotoxicity.
Technology readiness level

This technology is at TRL 5, with ongoing validation efforts to expand the platform for various active ingredients. Future plans include achieving nanoscale particle sizes and further trials on non-tolerant crops.

About Universidade Federal de Pelotas

Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel) is a comprehensive federal public research university headquartered in Pelotas and serving southern Brazil. The university connects with industry through Conectar, its incubator that gives startups access to UFPel laboratories and partners, and through active participation in the Pelotas Technology Park, a regional hub for startups and collaborative R&D. Integration with the Hospital Escola (HE‑UFPel), part of the national EBSERH network, enables clinical research and translational partnerships. Research is supported by competitive federal and state agencies such as CNPq, CAPES, FINEP, and FAPERGS. INOVA, UFPel’s innovation and technology transfer office, manages IP, licensing, and university–industry agreements.
