An eco-friendly enzyme-based bleaching additive derived from a native Mexican fungal strain (Pycnoporus sanguineus CS43) that produces high redox potential laccases with exceptional thermal and pH stability. This sustainable alternative to conventional chemical oxidation methods supports cleaner textile processing while reducing environmental impact.

Overview

This solution offers a green bleaching additive formulated with thermostable laccase enzymes produced from the autochthonous fungal strain Pycnoporus sanguineus CS43, isolated from northeastern Mexico. Laccases are oxidative enzymes that can replace conventional non-biological bleaching methods, aligning with the textile industry's growing demand for efficient and environmentally friendly oxidation technologies. The strain produces laccases with one of the highest enzymatic activities reported in the literature, making them particularly well-suited for industrial textile applications where performance and sustainability must be balanced.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Laccase enzymes produced from native Pycnoporus sanguineus CS43 strain with high redox potential
  • Exceptional thermal stability with optimal activity between 40 and 70 °C
  • Broad pH tolerance with optimal activity in the pH 2 to 6 range
  • Resistance to common enzyme inhibitors found in industrial processes
  • High enzymatic activity reaching up to 143,000 IU L⁻¹ using an economical culture medium
  • Standardized overproduction methodology enabling scalable manufacturing

Applications:

  • Textile industry bleaching processes as a replacement for conventional chemical oxidants
  • Removal of oxidizable stains in industrial and commercial formulations
  • Potential for immobilized enzyme formulations to enhance stability and concentration for commercial use
Technology readiness level

The laccase production methodology has been standardized and validated at laboratory scale, with demonstrated enzymatic activity levels among the highest reported globally. Future validation efforts will focus on two stages: first, testing enzyme formulations against oxidizable stains and developing immobilized laccase variants for improved stability and concentration capacity; second, evaluating shelf life and effectiveness of the selected formulation under room temperature storage conditions alongside quality control parameter assessment. The technology is positioned for transition from laboratory validation to formulation development and eventual commercial deployment in textile bleaching applications.
