A fresh cherry tomato carrying an 11-fold increase in lutein - the carotenoid that concentrates in the human macula and is associated with eye health. It was created by precision gene editing, retains no foreign DNA, and looks, grows and tastes like a conventional tomato. Five cherry tomatoes deliver roughly the lutein content of a standard supplement tablet.

WHY IT MATTERS

Lutein cannot be synthesised by the human body and must come from diet. Most people get too little: the richest common sources are dark leafy greens that many consumers eat rarely, while lutein supplements sit in the pill aisle rather than the produce aisle. Screen time and an ageing population have made eye health one of the fastest-growing claims in functional foods, yet almost all of that demand is met by capsules.

This product moves a supplement-grade dose into an everyday fresh food. For growers and seed companies it is a differentiated, premium-priced item in a category - fresh tomato - where differentiation is otherwise difficult. In Korean consumer research, 83% of respondents (n=709) indicated intent to purchase.

HOW IT WORKS

Lutein and lycopene compete for the same carotenoid precursor. In a normal red tomato, flux runs overwhelmingly toward lycopene, and lutein stays low.

Using SpCas9, we induced a chromosomal inversion that repositions an endogenous promoter located about 40 kb away so that it drives lycopene epsilon-cyclase (LcyE), the branch-point enzyme directing flux toward lutein. Only the plant's own sequences are used, rearranged within the same chromosome. No gene from another organism is introduced, and vector sequences are undetectable by PCR in the final lines.

Because the edit redistributes carotenoid flux rather than adding a new pathway, total carotenoid content stays within the range already found across tomato diversity.

PROOF TO DATE

Measured carotenoids in our edited line: lutein 73.4 mg/kg fresh weight, against 8.9 in MoneyMaker and 4.9 in MiniChal. Total carotenoids reach 105.8 mg/kg - below the 165.8 mg/kg we measured in a traditional heirloom variety grown alongside, confirming that the total pool is not pushed beyond what tomato diversity already contains.

Health Canada has reviewed the line and concluded it is not a novel food and not subject to pre-market assessment under Division 28, Part B of the Food and Drug Regulations. Their assessment confirmed that lutein is not a key nutrient of tomato, and that beta-carotene and lycopene in our line remain within observed species ranges. A formal determination request is in preparation.

The trait is protected by a granted Korean patent with international applications proceeding through PCT.

NEXT STEPS

We are crossing the edited line into commercial backgrounds and expect combinations reaching 50 to 120 mg/kg lutein, and are pursuing regulatory clearance in additional markets.

We are seeking partners across the value chain: seed production, protected cultivation, fresh distribution, and branded functional-food commercialisation. We are also open to licensing the trait into partner germplasm and to co-developing processed formats such as juice and sauce. Structures can be licensing, joint venture or milestone-based co-development.ch rate with potential partners.
