University

A biotechnology platform combining in vitro mutagenesis with gamma radiation and micropropagation to develop banana and plantain varieties resistant to Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (TR4). Leverages elite Peruvian germplasm to create genetically diverse populations for breeding new commercially viable, disease-tolerant cultivars.

Overview

Fusarium wilt caused by Tropical Race 4 (TR4) poses an existential threat to Peru's banana industry, affecting both subsistence farmers and the organic Cavendish export sector. This project delivers a biotechnology-driven breeding platform that uses in vitro mutagenesis combined with gamma radiation to generate broad-based mutant populations from elite banana and plantain materials adapted to Peruvian smallholder conditions. The goal is to produce promising in vitro banana material with tolerance or resistance to Fusarium TR4 while preserving the agronomic and quality traits required for commercial viability.

Technical specifications

Core capabilities and approach:

  • Micropropagation expertise for banana and plantain, enabling rapid multiplication of elite germplasm
  • In vitro mutagenesis using gamma radiation as a mutagenic agent to induce genetic diversity
  • Radiosensitivity determination for banana varieties to optimize mutation induction protocols
  • Acclimatization of vitroplants to transition tissue-cultured material to field-ready plants
  • Physiological and molecular characterization of mutant populations for response to Fusarium isolates
  • Selection pipeline for identifying promising mutants with resistance to the fungal pathogen

Key advantages:

  • Builds on existing in vitro collections of elite national materials adapted to local growing conditions
  • Generates broad genetic base populations as a starting point for breeding new varieties with strong agronomic potential and fruit quality
  • Addresses the gap left by global breeding efforts, which have yet to deliver a commercially acceptable Cavendish replacement for Peruvian conditions
Technology readiness level

The platform is at an early-to-mid development stage. Foundational capabilities in banana micropropagation, gamma radiation mutagenesis, and vitroplant acclimatization are already established at UNALM's Institute of Biotechnology. Current work focuses on characterizing elite national germplasm, determining radiosensitivity profiles, and initiating in vitro mutagenesis to produce mutant populations. Subsequent validation will involve molecular and physiological screening against Fusarium isolates to confirm resistance. Field-level validation and variety release remain future steps.
